History

Mountain Splash is not the first Smokies area rental property to be listed here (nor may it be the last). The website first went online in the spring of 2007.

Dave and Phyllis Baseler owned two rental cabins, both located in the mountains above Gatlinburg. They purchased All Decked Out in 1996 and Smoky Mountain Tower in 2008. Both were originally rented through a local rental management company.

In early 2007, Dave and Phyllis (working with two of their daughters – first Angie, then Marcia) made the decision to rent their cabins directly to guests in order to provide better quality and service. That’s where the website name came from – renting Smokies cabins directly to guests. They also joined a Smokies Yahoo message board with about 60 other owners who also rent their cabins directly. The SmokiesRentDirect rental program was very successful, due in large part to the local property owners working together through the Yahoo board.

In early 2014, the Baselers removed Smoky Mountain Tower from the overnight rental program and rented it long-term to a young couple, who subsequently purchased the property in February 2015. Then, in November 2016, All Decked Out was destroyed in the Gatlinburg fires. By this time, the Baselers were in their late 70s, so they decided not to rebuild. Instead, they posted a notice on the Yahoo Board that the SmokiesRentDirect.com website was available. The Bricklers immediately expressed interest in taking over the website. The transfer was made in August 2017.

More information about the Gatlinburg fires and the two cabins can be found at www.dbaseler.org/SRD (note: SRD must be in all caps).
